چکیده

[1] Triton and Europa each display a variety of distinctive curvilinear ridges and associated troughs. Here we propose that ridges on Triton may have formed by diurnal tidal stresses, in a manner similar to that proposed for ridge formation on Europa. The greater width of ridges on Triton is likely a consequence of the lower surface temperature and greater brittle-ductile transition depth on this body compared to Europa. The magnitudes of the stresses and heat fluxes required to generate ridges of the correct scale are comparable to likely values generated during the latter part of Triton’s orbital evolution from an initial highly eccentric state. Comparison of Ridges on Triton and Europa

Introduction: Triton and Europa each display a variety of ridges and associated troughs. The resemblance of double ridges on these two satellites has been previously noted [R. Kirk, pers. comm.], but as yet, the similarities and differences between these feature types have not been examined in any detail. Triton's ridges, and Europa's, exhibit an evolutionary sequence ranging from isolated trou...

Evidence for shear failure in forming near-equatorial lineae on Europa

[1] Global stress models for Europa are unable to readily explain the orientations of lineae in the equatorial region of Europa’s trailing hemisphere if lineae originate as tension cracks. Our analysis of two equatorial, trailing regions reveals that lineae are predominantly oriented NE and NW, and E-W lineae are rare, contrary to predictions of stress and formation models. The measured orienta...

On the origins of band topography, Europa

We use stereo-derived topography of extensional bands on Europa to show that these features can be elevated by 100–150 m with respect to the surroundings, and that the positive topography sometimes extends beyond the band margins. Lateral variations in shell thickness cannot maintain the observed topography for timescales greater than ∼ 0.1 Myr. Lateral density variations can maintain the obser...

Strike-slip motion and double ridge formation on Europa

[1] There is abundant observational evidence for strike-slip displacement on the surface of Europa. Strike-slip motion between crustal blocks produces shear heating and an increase in temperature. We model the shear heating within the ice crust using a two-dimensional, finite difference formulation, with a near-surface brittle layer of constant specified thickness and a Newtonian ductile layer ...

Shear heating and weakening of the margins of West Antarctic ice streams

Ice streams are fast flowing bands of ice separated from stagnant ridges by shear margins. The mechanisms controlling the location of the margins remain unclear. We use published ice deformation data and a simple one-dimensional thermal model to show that West Antarctic ice stream margins have temperate ice over a substantial fraction of their thickness, a condition that may control their width...
